If they don’t have any ID then don’t trust them. Don’t just accept a business card as ID. The business card could belong to anybody. If you do accept a business card from the contractor then keep it in a safe place. If there is a number on there give it a ring before you agree to any work being done on the driveway or patio.

If you know someone who has lately had some residential paving carried out or you know of a local building site that is in the paving stage then you can ask the people who were in charge of these jobs exactly who their preferred paving contractor is. These will generally make rather good references because people are unlikely to recommend someone that they didn’t like dealing with or even did a bad job.
